Who Is Padma Viswanathan? Int’l Booker Shortlisted Indian-Origin Writer

A translator’s name does not always become the talking point of a major literary prize, but this year, Padma Viswanathan is hard to miss. Her English translation of Brazilian writer Ana PaulaMaia’sOn Earth As It Is Beneath has earned a place on the 2026 International Booker Prize shortlist.

The moment stands out for another reason too. Viswanathan, a writer of Tamil heritage, joins the growing list of Indian names making a space in global literary conversations, especially in translation, where language itself becomes an integral part of the craft.

    Who is Padma Viswanathan?

Born in Nelson, Canada, in 1968, Padma Viswanathan has built a literary career that moves across forms and geographies. She has written fiction, memoir, plays, radio work, and translations, with her books published in eight countries.

Many readers may know her through The Toss of a Lemon, a sweeping novel shaped by South India’s social history, or The Ever After of Ashwin Rao, which looks at the grief of the 1985 Air India bombing. Her essays, short fiction, and translations have also appeared in respected literary spaces such as Granta, Boston Review, and Brick.

    Why this Booker-Prize nomination matters

This year’s shortlist recognition comes for On Earth As It Is Beneath. The novella, set in a remote penal colony, has been praised by judges for its stark, unsettling portrayal of cruelty, punishment and the thin line between justice and violence.

Her shortlist appearance also fits into a larger literary moment. Last year, Kannada writer Banu Mushtaq and translator Deepa Bhasthi won the prize for Heart Lamp, marking a breakthrough for Kannada literature on the global stage.

Viswanathan’s nomination continues that wider recognition of South Asian and Indian-origin literary voices. The winner will be announced on May 19 at the Tate Modern in London. For now, Indian readers will be hoping she brings it home.
