If you’ve been on social media lately, you’ve probably seen people talking about the “girlfriend effect” or the “boyfriend effect.” The trend usually shows someone before they started dating, and then how they look after getting into the relationship. Suddenly, there’s better hair, sharper outfits, clearer skin, or just an overall glow. The influence of the partner caters for this behaviour change, which in turn shows in their appearance. Let me explain.
Feeling Seen Can Boost Confidence
When people feel valued and appreciated, it often reflects in how they carry themselves. Confidence can subtly change posture, the way someone speaks, or how comfortable they feel expressing themselves.
Sometimes, the biggest change in this so-called “girlfriend effect” or “boyfriend effect” isn’t a new outfit or some skincare routine added to the day; it’s simply someone feeling more secure in their own skin.
Relationships also tend to shift daily routines. People may start going out more, trying new activities, or becoming more socially active. A partner may encourage things like regular workouts or better sleep habits.
Over time, these small changes can affect physical appearance as well as overall well-being. None of these things happen overnight, but over time they can make a visible difference. Of course, social media makes everything look more dramatic.
A before-and-after video can make it seem like someone completely changed because of their partner. In reality, people are always growing and trying to make themselves better as they move forward in life.
Sometimes the trend can also send the wrong message, like someone needed a relationship to “improve,” which isn’t really fair, according to me.
At the end of the day, the girlfriend effect or boyfriend effect isn’t magic that happens overnight. It’s just what happens when people spend time together, influence each other.
