Deepu Kanwar, a resident of Barmar from Rajasthan, has been selected in the Gujarat Judicial Service (GJS) seven years after her marriage. She secured 79th rank, crediting her in-laws for all the support and providing her with the right study environment.
A Marriage That Didn’t Interrupt Her Dreams
Deepu got married about seven years ago to Lokendra Singh from Jalipa in Barmer. At that time, she was still in the second year of her LLB in Jamnagar. Most people assume marriage changes everything. In her case, it didn’t.
She carried her books and her goal of becoming a judge into her new home. Her father-in-law, Than Singh, was clear about one thing. Studies come first. Her mother-in-law, Samad Kanwar, stood with her in the same way.
Deepu told Prabhat Khabar that whenever she tried to help with chores, her in-laws would step in and encourage her to just focus on studying.
Deepu also shared that her in-laws made a separate study room for her, almost like a hostel, giving her the kind of focus that serious preparation needs.
Three Attempts
Deepu started practising law in 2021. In 2022, she cleared prelims and mains but did not get through the interview. In 2023, she could not clear the main. She didn’t give up. In 2025, on her third attempt, she finally made it, securing the 79th rank.
When the result came out, Deepu was at her maternal home in Jamnagar. Before checking, she went to a temple and prayed. She later said, “When I saw my name in the result, I couldn’t believe it and checked again.” She first called her father. Then she travelled overnight to Barmer. The next morning, when she shared the news with her in-laws, the whole family celebrated.
