Stay-at-home mothers in the UAE will now be referred to as “generation shapers” instead of “housewives,” following an announcement by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai. He reportedly directed the Community Development Authority to adopt the new term on Mother’s Day, March 21, in a bid to honour the role of mothers in shaping families and society.
“Mothers are the first school for their children, the place where children learn belonging, responsibility and the values that shape strong nations,” Sheikh Hamdan said in a post on X, adding, “To all our mothers… Thank you. You are the foundation of everything good.”
Voices That Reinforce the Message
Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, widely known as the “Mother of the Nation,” described a mother’s role as “a cornerstone of stability”. She added, “On Mother’s Day, I extend my sincerest feelings of appreciation to every mother in the UAE and around the world.” She also called them the “foundation upon which tranquillity in homes is built.”
Mansoor Al Mansoori, Chairman of the Department of Health in Abu Dhabi, brought the focus to everyday impact, saying, “Mothers are the first guardians of family health, shaping behaviours, guiding decisions, and building the resilience of future generations.” He added, “In times of uncertainty, this role becomes even more critical.”
Taken together, the message is clear and confidently stated. Mothers are not defined by a household label. They are recognised as the force that shapes families, values and the future.
A Title That Reflects Reality
This is not just a softer label. By formally shifting terminology, the UAE is acknowledging what has always been true but rarely stated clearly. Raising a generation is work that shapes the country itself.
The directive to the Community Development Authority makes that recognition official. It brings mothers’ contributions out of the background and into the language of policy and public life.
